Hair masks are my favourite at-home treatment right now, especially as my hair gets angry if I don’t keep indulging this new habit at least once a month.
I have been so impressed with the results from using hair masks regularly, even my husband noticed that my hair is looking ‘less terrifying’, and that, believe me, is a sincere compliment. I promise you that fried ends, dehydrated tresses and straw like texture can be smoothed into shape with a little help from the right hair mask. (And in less time than it takes to get a good selfie.)
Tim Pateman senior Stylist at The Lion & The Fox told me more about why you should invest in hair masks, like right now.
Essentially, he says, “A hair mask is maintenance for the hair, it allows you to condition your hair more deeply and a decent hair mask can be up to ten times stronger than your average conditioner.”
These masks take five minutes or less, and are well worth it.
Deep MUK Ultra Soft 1 Minute Treatment $23.50. If you literally don’t have any time, like barely time to even read this article, then this is the one product you need to add to cart right now. Muk is an Australian brand and the Australians really know how to revive desperate tresses. This intense hair mask will add softness to stressed hair, improving hair elasticity in only 60 seconds. Use with every shampoo if your hair is genuinely frazzled, otherwise a weekly top up will reap amazing results. Side note – the gardenia fragrance is divine.
Shea’s got it going on
Pateman says to “match your choice of hair mask to your hair needs.” If you’re not sure if you need added protein and strength or simply more hydration, ask your stylist for their opinion.
For treated hair, we love Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Deep Treatment Masque $16.63. Sure it’s a bit of a mouthful to say, but it really does pack a punch of restorative power to your hair, in only 5 minutes. This product is incredible for transitioning chemically treated hair to natural, and all using the power of Shea butter.
Remember being a kid with pure, untouched hair that actually looked healthy and felt healthy? Until recently I actually winced when I heard brittle bits breaking off in my brush, and honestly? That’s not how I want to live.
Luckily Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask $32.58 is a literal lifesaver for unhappy broken down hair. It adds a high shine as well as a hit of moisture and protein to support healthier, stronger hair. And all in only 5 minutes. To get the best results from your hair masks, Pateman suggests, “Towel dry your shampooed hair lightly and apply the mask, afterwards, when rinsing, follow by a conditioner to seal the properties of the mask .”
Give me strength
As hair pro Frédéric Fekkai says, “A lot of things women do to their hair can damage it. By adding daily strength, you can prevent damage before it happens.” I know I’m guilty… not only do bite off split ends for fun (shocker!) and straighten it on the highest setting, I’ve also been known to rough brush and generally disrespect my hair. I’m ashamed. But like I say, things are changing for me and my hair-lationship. I highly recommend the Fekkai PRX Reparatives Intensive Fortifying Masque $25.00 for protecting hair from future damage while restoring it’s potential by infusing hair with argan oil extract. It’s literally a hug for your hair.
I love a bargain beauty buy that delivers and $2.97 has cult status for me and my friends. When times are hard, your hair is screwed and cash is scarce, there’s always Aussie, the light at the end of the hair horror tunnel, with their 3 Minute Miracle mask that quickly nourishes damaged hair, leaving silky feel and fragrant. Thank you Aussie. I really mean that.
