If you’re anything like us, as soon as the sun comes out you drop everything to sit in it and feel that beautiful, unfamiliar warmth on your face. No matter that you’re in the middle of the parking lot or in the queue to get gas, once you close your eyes you could be anywhere, as long as that incredible heat keeps working its superpowers on you.
“As beautiful as sunshine is, it’s a cruel and evil mistress that plays havoc with your skin.”
While you might find it comforting and uplifting, your skin cells are literally being scorched out of shape. How can something that feels so right be so wrong? Sun and skin desperately want to be friends but it’s one tricky relationship. To get the most out of summer with no regrets, you’re going to need to switch up your skincare routine.
We spoke to leading skin experts to bring you summer skincare tips that you’d be dumb not to try.
Have a clear out
Sweat, pollution, product. They all end up deep in your pores, especially during summer. New York Dermatologist Dr. Papantoniou says, “Regular exfoliation helps to remove dead skin cells and keeps your skin tone even.”
Once or twice a week use an exfoliating product for a pore detox. Murad’s AHA/BHA Exfoliating Cleanser works with glycolic acid to remove impurities and can be used on the face and body.
Keep it light
Minimise your summer skincare and use products that multitask. Don’t clog your face with layers of product. That’s a rookie mistake. A tinted moisturizer with SPF will help give you a natural looking glow as well as hydration and protection. We love bareMinerals Complexion Rescue Tinted Hydrating Gel Cream which is effectively a BB, CC and SPF all in one.
Paul Banwell, Head of the Melanoma and Skin cancer Unit at Queen Victoria Hospital says: “Ideally you should apply sun protection twice a day.” Not only to provide, “base line protection, but also to minimise the effects of photo-ageing.” If you’re on the go, top up your sunscreen by using a sun spray. They create a barrier on the skin without you having to rub them in. We rate La Roche Posay’s Anthelios Anti-Shine Invisible Fresh Mist Spray SPF50.
For summer make sure everything you use on your skin contains UVA and UVB protection – and that includes makeup. We love ILIA Tinted Lip Conditioner SPF15 and Supergoop Invincible Setting Powder SPF45 which protect as well as prettify.
Summer can leave your skin feeling like it’s having the worst hangover of its life. So, be sure to nourish your face and body with hydrating night-time moisturizers. Go for ones with natural plant extracts and oils as they’re more compatible with your skin. You should also increase your water intake. Keep a reusable bottle with you throughout the day – we love these metallic ones by Liberty Bottleworks. Go on, quench yourself.
